Private consumption in Uganda is anticipated to have grown strongly over 2013; price growth (which is forecast at 5.3% for the year) has increased slightly, but we expect it to remain in single digits for 2014. Uganda's rapidly expanding population, with millions of young Ugandans entering the workforce, will further bolster private consumption, as the consumer market expands and the productive capacity of the economy increases.

We forecast that GDP per capita will increase from an US$667 in 2013 to US$1,288 in 2017, suggesting greater household wealth and increased disposable income with which to purchase consumer goods. The completion of the Bujagali power station (which came online in August 2012) has helped to overcome the threat of a notoriously unreliable energy supply. However, the instability of the country's neighbour, South Sudan, could prove economically harmful should it impact Uganda's ability to export to its major export destination of Sudan.
