This is the fourth title in our latest series of global category reports, published in partnership with The IWSR. Containing latest released 2017 actual market data and new forecasts to 2022, this offers the very latest global category insights for the international whiskies sector (predominantly covering US, Irish, Canadian and Japanese whiskies).

The vast and diverse international whiskies category is in the middle of a purple patch of growth. From volumes of just over 270m cases in 2013, sales broke through the 300m-case barrier in 2016 and rose 2.3% in 2017 to reach almost 315m cases.

India rules volumes: In volume terms, Indian whisky accounts for well over half of the market, although its growth trajectory in the hugely dominant domestic market was interrupted in 2017, dropping marginally to 189.3m cases.

Value picture: But the value picture is different, with American, Canadian and Irish whiskies taking the top four places, and only eight Indian whiskies making the top 20.

Strategy take-away: While emerging markets have an obvious allure for brand owners, there are still great gains to be made for international whisky in established western markets. Only a few brands, such as Jack Daniel’s and Jameson, are firmly established here.

Max Shapira, president, Heaven Hill: "As large as the US whiskey category is today, with the growth that we have had over the last few years, it is still much smaller than in the 1950s and early 1960s… Then, if you factor in the worldwide opportunity, it really highlights the potential."

Paul Varga, CEO, Brown-Forman: "In both instances the introduction of those two flavours – Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey and Fire – were almost defensive reactions to what we were experiencing in the marketplace and mostly around the shot occasion. Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey in particular then very quickly became a very offensive project because people really enjoyed it."
