Continued success

This is the sixth and last title in our 2018 series of global category reports, published in partnership with The IWSR. Containing latest released 2017 actual market data and new forecasts to 2022, this offers the very latest global category insights for the Tequila and mezcal sectors.

Global sales of agave-based spirits continued to move in an upward direction in 2017. Tequila volumes were up 5% to 31.2m cases – improving on the 2013-17 CAGR of 4.3%.

All agave: Meanwhile, total agave-based spirit sales, including the dynamic mezcal category, rose 5.2% to 31.9m cases, again an improvement on the 2012-17 CAGR of 4.2%.

Broadly positive: Tequila’s top eight markets all recorded volume increases in 2017, but trends in smaller destinations were more mixed, with 13 out of the top 20 climbing, but seven declining.

Strategy take-away: Despite efforts to build sales elsewhere, Tequila and mezcal remain hugely reliant on the US and Mexico, which now account for more than 85% (and rising) of all agave
spirits sales. Expanding Tequila’s global footprint is perhaps the greatest task facing brand owners in the years ahead.

Senior industry executives contributed to the research and provided some interesting views on the state of the sector:

Deirdre Mahlan, president, Diageo North America: "The industry is going to have a year or two where there are higher input costs because of the supply and demand imbalance, which we think will even out in a couple of years."

Jennifer Simmonds, senior brand manager, Tequila Herradura: "The brand sees a lot of growth among multicultural, millennial consumers who aspire to be courageous leaders in their own right… The cristalino category has taken off in Mexico and is emerging in the US."
