Recovery position

This is the third title in our latest series of global category reports, published in partnership with The IWSR. Containing newly released 2017 actual market data and new forecasts to 2022, this offers the very latest global category insights for the Scotch whisky sector.

The latest IWSR data release confirms that the recovery of Scotch whisky sales in 2017, following four consecutive years of decline, was an important development; the category rose by around 1% to 92.7m nine-litre cases.

Not out of the woods: That’s not to say that the category is out of the woods, particularly as it saw declines in nine of its top 20 markets, including its top two – France and the US.

Positive malts: But in 2017, the aggregate picture for Scotch was positive, particularly for single malt, which is growing almost universally.

Return of blends: The really encouraging aspect, however, was the return to growth for blended Scotch, which still accounts for the lion’s share of category volumes, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

Strategy take-away: A number of new malt Scotch distilleries are opening at the moment, with others expanding to cope with soaring demand. The risk is that future demand fails to keep up with this medium-term increase in production.

Senior industry executives contributed to the research and provided some interesting views on the state of the sector:

Karen Betts, CEO, Scotch Whisky Association: "Trade between the UK and EU should be as straightforward as possible after the transition period concludes. Thirty percent of Scotch whisky exports go to the EU and, while these are not susceptible to increased tariffs after Brexit, maintaining zero tariffs on imported materials like glass, machinery and packaging will be important to us."

Jim Beveridge, master blender, Johnnie Walker: "On the one hand, the definitions that we have protect the category because they mean that any consumer buying Scotch whisky is guaranteed a product that meets the expected standards… On the other hand, as a whisky maker there can be a degree of frustration when you want to create a new expression or flavour that challenges the rules, because you think ‘if only I could do this or that’."
