Slight slowdown for RTDs; recovery position for cider

This is the fifth title in our latest series of global category reports, published in partnership with The IWSR. Containing latest released 2017 actual market data and new forecasts to 2022, this offers the very latest global category insights for the RTDs and cider sectors.

Global RTD sales declined by 1% in 2017 to 395.6m cases, a reversal of the +2.1% CAGR seen between 2013 and 2017. Nonetheless, the global market has added more than 30m cases since 2013. Meanwhile, a lacklustre performance in key markets meant that global cider volumes shrank in 2016, but recovered in 2017, rising 1.8% to 242m cases.

Twin spearheads: Two markets – Japan and the US – account for more than half of the global mixed drinks market at 111m and 100m cases respectively. Australia is the next-largest market at just over 30m cases.

Fruit-driven UK: The UK is far and away the largest market at 92m cases, following a CAGR of 1.6% between 2013 and 2017. The fruit segment continued to rise in popularity.

Strategy take-away: Trends towards craft and authenticity have the potential to aid growth for products whose origins and production tick those boxes – but more established brands could suffer unless they too can jump aboard the same bandwagon.
