The global market for ready-to-drinks (RTDs) continues to be one of the healthier sectors of the global marketplace, rising by 1.6% to 399.6m nine-litre cases in 2016. This is a slight reduction over its 2012-2016 CAGR of 3.5%. Of the top 50 markets, 33 posted CAGR gains over this period, including eight out of the top 10 markets.

Value in line: The value of the global market has grown roughly in line with volume growth. Global value between 2012 and 2016 was up by a CAGR of 3.5% to $17.4bn (fixed exchange with tax).

But cider on the way down: Global cider sales fell by 1.5% in 2016 to 238.8m cases. Following five years of impressive growth, driven largely by the Americas, cider consumption is forecast to grow at a much more moderate rate in the foreseeable future.

Strategy take-away: The increasing ‘category blur’ is inspiring savvy producers to move away from conventional notions of operating within a delineated sector – eg vodka or, more broadly, spirits – and use a brand’s equity to explore rival categories and product types.
