Growth trajectory

This is the first in our latest series of global category reports, published in partnership with The IWSR. Containing newly released 2017 market data, this offers the very latest global category insights for the gin sector. Note: the forecasts included are 2017 forecasts and so only cover 2018-2021 and may differ marginally from the 2018 forecasts due to be released later this month.

The 2017 IWSR data release confirms gin’s impressive growth trajectory in many markets, with total sales rising at a double-digit clip. However, while growth looks set to continue in most global markets, the US remains the glaring exception. Brand owners will be keen to turn positive signs at the upper end of the market into more widespread and solid growth.

Widespread gains: Total gin sales (excluding low priced) rose by 7.4% between 2016 and 2017 to just under 35m cases. Gin posted gains in 39 of its top 50 largest markets, with 19 of those markets growing at double digits.

Europe at the heart: Europe remains the epicentre of the so-called “ginaissance”, led by Spain and the UK. Several other markets – such as Germany, Italy and France – are coming on strongly from lower bases.

Premium positivity: Gin is forecast to be the secondfastest-growing international category to 2021 (behind whisky) and, crucially, growth here will be driven by the premium-and-above quality segments.

Pink power: Over the past couple of years, pink gin has seen a flush of success outside its spiritual home of Spain (where it accounts for 40% of all value growth in the category), persuading Pernod Ricard and Diageo to launch pink versions of their best-known brands, respectively Beefeater and Gordon’s.

Strategy take-away: Gin’s ceaseless quest to innovate worries some observers, who fear that producers are moving too far away from the spirit’s juniper-led roots, undermining the category and confusing consumers in the process.

Senior industry executives contributed to the research and provided some interesting views on the state of the sector:

Enzo Visone, co-founder and executive chairman, Quintessential Brands: “In the last two to three years there has been an explosion of gin brands, especially in the UK. In Spain there was already a huge market for smaller brands prior to the UK. It has become an overcrowded market and I do not think that they will all survive.”

James Ravlich, global marketing manager, De Kuyper (Rutte): [Pink gin’s revival] bodes well for cask-aged and genever-style gins which, for me, is most exciting. Reinventing old styles and cocktails remains a fruitful ground to engage with a new group of well-educated gin consumers.”
