Solid growth

Global gin sales climbed 1.2% between 2011 and 2016 to reach a new high of 58m nine-litre cases. However, the market looks very different if one excludes low-priced brands. This is the universe that the international companies typically play in, and thus the focus of this report.

Global sales (excluding lowpriced) amounted to 32.39m cases, a CAGR of 2.5% between 2012 and 2016. Of the top 20 largest markets, 17 posted increases over that period.

Super-premium supreme: In the majority of key European markets it was the super-premium gin segment that showed the strongest percentage growth. Many consumers are happy to spend a bit more to explore interesting brands with unique propositions.

Strategy take-away: "As brand owners focus on an ever-expanding basket of gin destinations around the world, their biggest challenge remains the reshaping of the hitherto volume-led US, where growth remains sluggish."

Senior industry executives contributed to the research and provided some interesting views on the state of the sector:

James Ravlich, global senior brand manager for spirits at De Kuyper Royal Distillers: “There are a number of ways in which producers are attempting to differentiate. Previously, key botanicals and signature serves was enough. However, to combat the number of entrants, it seems that unique styles, distinctive distillation methods, leveraging origin, or place of distillation have become more impactful ways to differentiate in a market where consumers are more interested how the product gets to them.”

Monkey 47 Founder Alexander Stein: “With consumer interest revolving around quality and brand distinction, we don’t see a crowded market as a concern. Monkey 47 is not your average gin and this is reflected in the brand’s history, high-quality ingredients and unmatched flavour profile. Our buyers tend to be brand loyalists with a penchant for individuality and we continue to see our sales grow across global markets.”
