Gin rises in 2015 

Global gin sales broke through the 50m-case barrier in 2010 for the first time, reaching a high-water mark of 53.4m nine-litre cases that year. Sales have since receded slightly, although 2015 saw a 2.5% rise over 2014 to around 52m cases.

But let's not get too carried away: If you exclude low-priced brands, global gin sales amounted to 31m cases in 2015. Despite the hype surrounding the category, it only rose by +1.4% CAGR between 2010 and 2015, although it accelerated by 4.1% in 2015.

Market spread: The UK, Spain, Germany, Canada and Belgium & Luxembourg all saw double-digit growth for premium-and-above products, but sales in the US again lagged behind the general market.

The future is… It is clear that gin has a bright future, but it needs to continue to appeal to ageing consumers who account for the bulk of its demographic. It also needs to keep recruiting new drinkers and continue looking beyond the classic gin and tonic occasion.

Jacob Ehrenkrona, CEO, Martin Miller’s: “The UK is about two to three years behind Spain, and the US is about two to three years behind the UK. Once they
start to catch up, which they are, things will happen very quickly.”

J C Iglesias, global brand director, Beefeater: “Brands that react purely to external factors certainly run the risk of damaging their brand equity or at the very least confusing consumers as to what that brand is about. However, an established brand, which uses insight gleaned from its customer base and its own history, can actually add to its equity through innovations.”
