Champagne leads growth 

Sparkling wine consumption, including Champagne, grew by 0.3% in 2015. Champagne outperformed non-Champagne sparklers, which represents a turnaround of the recent trend.

Prestige gains: In 2015 Champagne enjoyed continued gains in the US, Japan and Australia, while its leading export market, the UK, also returned to growth for the first time in at least five years. Here, its success was largely down to promotional activity during the Christmas period and less shelf space being given to prosecco.

Good times?: The received wisdom is that, when the good times roll, so do the bubbles. This is borne out by a general rise in Champagne consumption over the past 20 years, punctuated by two ‘boom’ periods: pre-millennium and just before the global financial crisis of 2008.

Devil in the detail: But to truly understand the global Champagne market, you have to investigate the detail: France accounts for more than half (52.8%) of consumption, but that still makes this the second most international sparkling wine category (behind Italian sparkling).

Prosecco boom: Prosecco is the global success story in sparkling wine at the moment, driven by a consumer thirst for ‘affordable luxury’ and an easy-to-understand, fruity flavour profile that works across different geographies and demographics.

Senior industry executives contributed to the research and provided some interesting views on the state of the sector:

Julie Campos, MD, Nicolas Feuillatte: "Sparkling wine consumption is increasing tremendously and, to be honest, it’s not increasing because of Champagne, but because of increased consumption of prosecco, cava, Tasmanian sparkling and Californian sparkling wines."

Myriam Renard, export manager, Pommery: "Our activity in Europe, including France [in the first half of 2016], is even slightly higher than last year. We are, of course, satisfied, but not triumphant, as those performances are partly due to a stronger promotional programme and more activities with our [retail] partners than in the previous year in the travel-retail channel."
