There are short-term challenges, but in mid-2019 Champagne is continuing to develop in terms of value creation and internationalisation, opening up and expanding emerging markets, and increasing sales of higher-margin products such as prestige cuvées and rosé Champagne.

The 2018 harvest came as a huge relief to the Champagne region – the biggest crop in a decade, following two successive small vintages, and one which has great quality potential.

The 2017-18 period has witnessed two landmarks: for the first time in over a century, export shipments overtook those within the domestic French market; and shipments to Europe were exceeded by those to the rest of the world.

just-drinks' review of the Champagne sector focuses on a review of production in the region, exports and the brand owners involved. Annual data is provided from 2009 to 2018.

Within the production chapter, perrenial visitor to the Champagne region, report author Richard Woodard succinctly rounds up the challenges and adversities the region faced in 2018 and how this affected each house's production success.

Report extract:

“The last decade makes us think about what should be, in new conditions of global warming, a new level of maturity [of grapes],” says Vincent Chaperon, chef de caves at Dom Pérignon.

“In the last 15 years, there have been more opportunities to go further [in terms of maturity], but with opportunities come a lot of questions … It’s not that the further you go, the better it is.

“With white wine you can go too far too quickly; with Champagne you can overpass maturity quickly and get something that’s too heavy. We always want to bring back energy, vibrancy, precision next to the depth. We want both.”
