HEALTHY GROWTH.

This report provides background information about the burgeoning, increasingly mainstream organic industry with consideration of current and ongoing trends and issues. It explores the growing subset of beverages made with ingredients produced according to organic principles and standards. Report extract:

Long before the likes of A-B and Miller entered organic territory, small brewers acted as pioneers. For instance, Otter Creek Brewing began producing organic beer in the late 1990s.

  • The Middlebury, Vermont-based brewer began operations in 1991, producing its Copper Ale brand.
  • Seven years later, it partnered with Panorama Brewing Company to start making Wolaver's Certified Organic Ales.
  • In 2002, the Wolaver family purchased Otter Creek, which continued to brew Wolaver's and other Otter Creek brands.
  • Vermont Organic Farmers certify the organic bona fides of the Wolaver's brand, which includes several varieties.
  • Full-year offerings pale ale and India pale ale and brown ale receive seasonal accompaniment in the form of oatmeal stout and wit beer. Wolaver's seasonal lineup included a 10th-anniversary-celebrating farmhouse ale.

Peak Organic Brewing Company of Portland, Maine, markets multiple styles of beer made with organic ingredients.

  • Jon Cadoux, the company's founder, started brewing beer in 1998, and several years later, in 2006, rolled out Peak Organic beers based on his own recipes. These included Pale Ale, Nut Brown Ale and Amber Ale.
  • In 2008, Peak Organic crafted its first seasonal offering by collaboration with local suppliers of organic ingredients. To produce Maple Oat Ale for the spring, Peak obtained ingredients from granola and nuts company GrandyOats of Brownfield, Maine, and maple syrup maker Butternut Mountain Farm of Morrisville, Vermont.
  • The following year, Peak prepared Pomegranate Wheat Ale using organic coriander, pomegranate and açaí juice.
  • The realization that many dedicated consumers wish to buy local goods, including beer, but that brewers often have to obtain ingredients from distant sources, which makes for a large carbon footprint, gave Cadoux the impetus to reduce Peak's environmental impact by turning to nearby organic farmers for ingredients. (A 2012 Thomson Reuters-NPR survey confirmed that a significant proportion of consumers preferring organic goods also wanted to support local farmers.)
  • Peak devised a series of "local" beers boasting "local ingredients and distinctive terrior." For the quartet, the company used barley and hops from one of four states (Maine, Massachusetts, New York and Vermont).
  • The brewer's lineup eventually expanded to include a separate seasonal ale for summer, spring, winter and fall as well as offerings such as Hop Noir (a black IPA), a conventional IPA, a Nut Brown Ale, an Amber Ale and a Stout.
