The emerging beverage industry investment themes to watch in 2022 – focus

05 Jan 2022

Health & safety, resource scarcity and renewable energy were the fastest emerging investment themes in the drinks industry last year, according to an analysis of trends across three pillars of key investment activity.

GlobalData selected the top 30 driving forces in recruitment, dealmaking and innovation (through patent filings) across 23 industries in 2021 and measured how far up or down the rankings had moved compared with the year prior. The results uncover which have the most momentum going into 2022 and could therefore establish themselves as critically important influencers.

Health & safety had the strongest momentum in beverage hiring patterns, climbing 19 places to rank ninth last year. This equated to 242 health & safety role vacancies for every 10,000 job postings in the sector in 2021, a significant increase.

Climate change was the second-fastest emerging hiring theme (up 12 ranking spots), while cybersecurity came in third (rising three ranking spots).

The fastest rising themes differ depending on the investment metric being analysed. ESG-related themes, such as ethics and governance, featured heavily across the board as emerging forces in recruitment, while themes related to disruptive technologies were the biggest risers across M&A and other deal-based investments.

Machine learning, for example, was a top-five theme for deal investment in seven out of the 23 industries analysed by GlobalData, with big data, autonomous vehicles and the Internet of Things each appearing in five.

Deals in which resource scarcity played a part enjoyed the biggest increase in ranking among drinks manufacturers and suppliers, rising 48 places compared to 2020. Natural resources was the second-fastest emerging dealmaking theme (up 48 ranking spots), while city growth engines came in third (climbing 38 places).

The final investment pillar analysed was patent filings, with the themes emerging here unsurprisingly tending to be at the cutting edge of each industry. This resulted in less overlap between industries but it was notable that renewable energy research was present for six of the 23.

Renewable energy-related patent filings had the most momentum in the drinks industry, ranking 17th in 2021. This was a lift of 29 ranking places compared to 2020. Emissions reduction was the second-fastest emerging innovation theme (up 16 ranking spots), while fintech care came in third (climbing six).

Late last month, GlobalData's thematic team produced its annual report predicting the biggest themes for 2022 in the tech, media and telecom industries, with top picks including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, the metaverse and augmented reality.
