Increasing bar revenues one step at a time

Modern bar culture promotes style and aesthetically challenging design but the most challenging task for any bar owner is making a profit. Robert Plotkin of BarMedia offers his top tips for creating a fun, money-spinning bar. It's hard to imagine that there's a bar owner who would suggest that his or her business wouldn't greatly benefit from increasing revenues. The adage "food covers overhead, but the bar is all profit" actually has its basis in fact. It would seem, therefore, that since no business operates under the burden of too much profit, finding ways to increase bar revenues is a nearly universal imperative.

UK soft drinks report: And you thought Britain was a nation of tea drinkers?

A report issued by AC Nielsen indicates that UK consumers are now spending more on cold soft drinks as they do on bread and, twice as much on cold drinks as they do hot. Coca-Cola continues to be king of AC Nielsen's top 100 UK brands, closely followed by Pepsi which, AC Nielsen says, accounts for 20% of sales. But one of the biggest growth areas seen so far in the UK is mineral water.

Danone Group has just acquired most of the assets of Canada's Naya, Inc., including a bottling plant in Mirabel, north of Montreal, which reports sales of EUR 75 million. Founded in 1986 in Mirabel, Naya has grown rapidly in Canada and the United States, bottling natural spring water under the Naya name.The acquisition doubles Danone Group's production capacity in North America and secures reserves to underpin its strategy of growth in the northeastern United States.
