Drinking Water Quality
Council Directive 98/83/EC of 3 November1998 has been published concerning the quality of water intended for human consumption.This Directive repeals Directive 80/778/EEC from 5 years after its entry into force (25December 2003) and Member States must take the measures necessary to ensure that thequality of water complies with this Directive within 5 years, other than for the bromate,lead and trihalomethanes parameters, which have extended compliance deadlines. MemberStates must implement the provisions of this Directive within 2 years of its entry intoforce; the provisions of the Directive will not apply until a Member State has implementedit and all measures have been taken to ensure compliance.

Cider and Perry - Code Of Practice
The Eighth edition of the NationalAssociation of Cider Makers' (NACM) Code of Practice on Cider and Perry Making hasbeen published.
The purpose of the Code of Practice is toensure consistent quality and standards for the making of cider and perry, and to meetconsumer expectations of a safe and wholesome product. Membership of the NACM isconditional upon adhering to the Association's voluntary Code of Practice, as well as itsMarketing Code of Practice. A summary of current legislation relevant to British cider andperry making is published in a Technical Addendum to the Code of Practice.

Hygiene - Draft Vending IndustryGuide
Leatherhead Food RA has received from theAutomatic Vending Association of Britain (AVAB), a draft Guide to compliance with the FoodSafety (General Food Hygiene) Regulations 1995 and the Food Safety (Temperature Control)Regulations 1995.
The draft Guide has been produced inliaison with the Department of Health and LACOTS, and is designed to assist thoseresponsible for replenishing and sanitising vending and dispensing machines (includingmeasures covering processing, storage, transportation, distribution and handling).
The Guide was developed in accordance witharticle 5 of the EC Directive on the hygiene of foodstuffs (93/43/EEC), and producedfollowing the Department of Health's 'template'.

Mineral, Spring and Bottled Waters- Draft
Leatherhead Food RA has received a letter from the Joint Food Safety and StandardsGroup (JFSSG) concerning the implementation of Directive 96/70/EC.
The Directive extends to spring waters some of the requirements that apply to naturalmineral waters, such as bottling at source, certain microbiological criteria andrestrictions on the treatment of water. The Directive also permits the treatment ofnatural mineral water and spring water with ozone enriched air in prescribedcircumstances.
Draft Natural Mineral Water, Spring Water and Bottled Drinking Water Regulations havebeen issued for consultation. The draft Regulations will implement Directive 96/70/EC, andrevoke and replace the Natural Mineral Water Regulations 1985 and the Drinking Water inContainers Regulations 1994.
