Carlsberg had a difficult final quarter in reported terms as sales dropped 3%, compared to a 1% drop for the full-year. The company struggled with pressure in its core Russia market, blaming the introduction of legislation related to PET bottle sizes.

  • Western Europe - FY sales flat

Carlsberg pointed the finger at currency fluctuations and the divestment of German wholesaler Nordic Getränke in April last year for its flat FY organic performance. Volumes took a hit from tough comparables because of Euro 2016, which Carlsberg sponsored. For example, UK volumes were down 6%.

Reported sales for the region were down 3% for the year as total volumes dropped by 4%.

  • Eastern Europe - FY sales -1%

Organically, performance was more muted, with sales falling by 1% for the full year despite price increases. Disruption came through the new PET bottle sizes in Russia, which affected volumes in the country and forced Carlsberg to turn to a value-based strategy instead of a volumes one. The company said the approach was a key driver of strong profit improvement.

Rebounds for the Russian Rouble helped drive Carlsberg's Eastern Europe reported sales up 7% even as volumes dropped by 8%.

  • Asia - FY sales +5%

Carlsberg was able to take price in the region and organic sales were up 5% despite flat volumes. Success for the company's premium portfolio in China helped drive an 8% organic sales increase in the country despite an overall 1% market contraction.

Reported sales in Asia were down 1% as currency headwinds hit China, Malaysia, Laos and Vietnam.
