What is the impact of China’s Zero-COVID lockdowns on economic activity, consumer goods and the foodservice industry?

While wanting to protect the country from being overwhelmed by Omicron, China’s adherence to a Zero-COVID policy is resulting in a significant economic downturn. COVID outbreaks in Shanghai, Beijing and many other Chinese cities will impact 2022’s economic growth as consumers and businesses experience rolling lockdowns, leading to a slowdown in domestic and international supply chains. China’s Zero-COVID policy is having a demonstrable impact on consumer-facing industries. Access GlobalData’s new whitepaper, China in 2022: the impact of China’s Zero-COVID lockdowns on economic activity, consumer goods and the foodservice industry, to examine the current situation in Shanghai and other cities in China, to better understand the worst-affected industry sectors, foodservice in particular, and to explore potential growth opportunities as China recovers. The figure, which features in GlobalData’s latest analysis of industry job vacancies, represents an increase on the 43.8% of companies recruiting for cloud vacancies in beverages in the same month last year. The rate in December last year was also lower, albeit less markedly, at 54.5%.

Of all advertised vacancies in the global beverage industry in January, 1.8% were linked to cloud, a slight lift on the 1.6% proportion in the same month of 2021.

The analysis indicates that beverage companies are currently hiring for cloud jobs at a lower rate compared to the average for all companies within GlobalData's job analytics database. The average among all companies stood at 6.9% for the month.

Cloud is one of the topics that GlobalData has identified as a key disruptive force facing companies in the coming years. Those that are investing in these areas now are considered to be better prepared for the future business landscape.

GlobalData's job analytics database tracks the daily hiring patterns of companies worldwide, drawing in vacancies as they're posted and tagging them with additional layers of data, from the seniority of each position to whether a job is linked to wider industry trends.
