Managing editor Olly Wehring will host a panel of industry experts to look at the 'State of the Nation' in 2012 and debate the findings of just-drinks' exclusive survey. As well as considering the views given by other industry observers, the panel will discuss the wine landscape, and offer their opinions on how to approach the future.

Richard Woodard writes for a variety of drinks magazines and websites on a broad range of wine- and spirits-related subjects.

He compiles the wine news for Imbibe magazine and website, writes a monthly spirits column for and blogs on wine and spirits for the website of Dagens Næringsliv, Norway’s leading financial newspaper.

He is also a regular contributor to Decanter and, The Spirits Business, The Drinks Business, Square Meal and various other consumer and trade titles.

James Lousada is the Commercial General Manager of Accolade Wines Europe, formerly Constellation Europe Ltd prior to its purchase by CHAMP Private Equity in January 2011.  He was appointed General Manager, Constellation Europe, in early 2010 following his successful leadership of the Commercial team in Europe during 2009. Over the last 12 months he has managed the launch of Accolade Wines across Europe, integrating a new business culture and ways of working into the new company, while sitting on the Executive Committee that is developing the global expansion of the business.

During his time in the business, he has reassessed the expansion into mainland Europe, over seen the rapid expansion into local UK bottling, including the exploitation of a major investment in state-of-the-art bottling facilities in Bristol, and continued to put the consumer and innovation at the heart of the Accolade Wines strategy.

Prior to this appointment, Lousada had joined Constellation from Fosters EMEA where he had led the Marketing team across Europe in addition to an emerging beer team in the same geography. He had been with Foster’s from 2005 which he joined following the acquisition of Southcorp Wines, where had also had held the role of Vice President Marketing for EMEA, since 2001.

Lousada made his move into the drinks industry in 1996 when he joined Anheuser-Busch as their European Marketing Director. Working on the Budweiser brand, he made his mark with industry leading activity including the Whassup and Frogs/Lizards advertising campaigns. Prior to Anheuser-Busch Lousada had a classical FMCG Marketing background with Best Foods (now Unilever) and Unigate.

Simon Doyle joined Concha y Toro in 2001 and played an integral role in setting up the company’s first overseas subsidiary in the UK. Over the last decade, Concha y Toro UK has grown wine sales from 250,000 to 5 million cases per year and in doing so has established Chile’s position as key player in the wine category.

Simon now heads up CyT UK, leading a 50-strong team of people across sales, marketing and logistics to develop the company’s brands and wineries from Chile, Argentina and now California across all trade sectors.

With 30 years of drinks industry experience, much of it selling wine from the southern hemisphere, Simon is convinced that if the wine trade is to prosper in the UK, it must recognise the importance of brands and value their role in encouraging consumers to pay a fair price for wine.

Su Birch is CEO of Wines of South Africa (WOSA), a position she has held since May 2000. She holds a BA Honours degree, a teaching diploma and a MBA.

She was a founder member of WIETA (Wine Industry Ethical Trade Association) and has served on the EXCO as a board member from 2002. Su has also been a driver of conservation and sustainable farming in the Cape wine lands.

In 2005 Su was awarded the Lanson Woman In Wine Trophy at the IWSC in London. In 2006 the Cape Masters of Wine honoured Su as Wine Personality of the Year. In 2009 Su received the Drinks Business Woman of the Year Award in London.

In 2012 she was named by Wine Intelligence as one of the ten wine industry figures who have made a significant contribution to the business of wine over the past decade.
