There is a small, but growing trend, for people under the age of 30 to drink more wine in South Africa.

The Wine of the Month Club, with 30,000 members claims that over the past six months, the number of members under 25 years of age has risen from 2.8% to 6.19% and those below 30 from 8.54% to 13.41%.

"This is a major jump and represents a new trend we believe. Right now 64.56% of our business comes from the 36-to-100 age category. This has dropped from 73.64% over the past six months," said Tai Collard, MD of Wine of the Month Club.

He said wine was now being regarded as far more trendy than other alcohol such as beer.
