The head of South Africa's wine trade body has announced she is stepping down.

Su Birch, who has been CEO of Wines of South Africa (WoSA) since May 2000, confirmed earlier today (24 April) that she will leave the post at the end of September. The search for a replacement for Birch, 63, will be conducted "over the coming weeks", the organisation said.

"I shall be leaving the organisation with a sound international team in place at the same time that the country has evolved into a significant player in world wine markets, well on its way to capturing and building on new opportunities," said Birch.

She will stay with WoSA to help organise 'The Beautiful South' tasting, a trade event set to be held in London in September featuring wine representatives from Argentina, Chile and South Africa.
