Despite an indefinite nationwide strike by South Africa's civil servants, the Department of Agriculture's liquor products division continues to operate to ensure wine exports are not unduly compromised.

The team intend to work through the strike, but Wines of South Africa (WOSA) has warned wineries that the analytical services and financial section for the payment of export certificates could be affected.

Certain certification analysis had been outsourced, but WOSA called on companies to assist where possible, as some difficulties were being experienced. The trade body has requested that the 'Wine Online' system be used to establish which export certificates, with samples, and renewal certificates were outstanding.

Qualified, independent analyses should be done if necessary. This would be verified with Government samples after the strike.

"They are trying their best to ensure that export consignments are not delayed in any way," WOSA told exporters.
