Total wine production in Austria in 2006 is expected to be 2.4m hectolitres, representing an 8% increase on last year and 4% above the average annual volume over the past five years, according to preliminary statistics released by Statistic Austria.

Production in the Lower Austria region is expected to be around 1.5m hectolitres, 7.0% up on last year and 7% above the five-year average. Production is forecast to rise by 1% year-on-year in the Weinviertel region to 794,000 hls, while wine volumes in the Kamptal region will be 3% up at 175,000 hls.

However, the sharpest rise will be seen in Burgenland where production is expected to rise by 14% year-on-year to 786,200 hls, 2% above the five-year average.

Production in Styria is expected to fall by 2% from last year to 171,600 hls, while production in Vienna is forecast to be on a par with last year at 19,600 hls.

In total, Austria will produce in the region of 1.6m hectolitres of white wine in 2006, and 854,000 hectolitres of red wine.
