ITALY: Wine exports lift as year begins

Exports of wine from Italy rose slightly in the first five months of this year, according to recent figures.

The country's farmers' union, Coldiretti, said today (4 September) that Italian wine exports in the period increased by 7% year-on-year. While exports to the US enjoyed a 9% climb on 2005, wine exports to China and India leapt by 70% and 115% respectively.

European exports were more modest in the period, lifting by 2% on the corresponding period a year earlier.

In 2005, Italian wine producers sold EUR9bn (US$11.5bn) worth of wine, with EUR3bn of this coming from exports.
