A bill that will see bottles of alcohol in the Czech Republic carry government stamps, in an effort to combat illegal production and sales of alcohol, is one step away from becoming law.

Yesterday, the country's upper house passed the bill 27-19 in favour, with five abstentions.

Having already been passed by the lower house last mont, the bill needs only the signature of President Vaclav Klaus to become law.

Estimates suggest illegal sales of alcohol could account for as much as 30% of all alcohol sales.
