FRANCE: Union calls for Perrier demo

By | 2 September 2004

The CGT labour union at Perrier has called for a demonstration at the company's HQ at Vergèze, in south-east France, next Monday, coupled with a two-hour work stoppage amid continuing uncertainty surrounding Nestle's plans for the French water brand.

In late July, Nestle Waters France had to shelve plans for the industrial re-organisation of Perrier due to opposition from the CGT, which represents over 80% of the workforce. The Swiss giant hoped to shed 1,047 jobs by 2007 using an early retirement package.

It said that the CGT's rejection of the plans would mean "other approaches will have to be considered for the future of the company, its brands and its sites, and will be announced in September 2004."
