INDIA: UB in talks to buy UK distiller - report

By | 26 January 2006

India's UB Group has reportedly held talks to buy an unnamed UK Scotch distiller.

UB, which last year became the world's second-largest spirits group by volume, has completed the first round of negotiations to buy the UK distiller, Indian daily Business Standard claimed, citing sources close to the talks.

UB chairman Vijay Mallya said the company was always on the look-out for acquisitions but refused to be drawn on any proposed takeover.

"Nothing has been finalised as yet and I cannot talk much on the acquisition plans now," he told the newspaper today (26 January).

UB leaped to the world's number two spirits spot after buying a majority stake in local rival Shaw Wallace last year. The group is in the process of merging its domestic operations into one company, United Spirits.

UB officials could not be reached for comment as just-drinks went to press.
