Suntory started working with Anellotech in 2012

Suntory Holdings is to build a testing plant in Texas to help develop new, greener PET bottles.

The Japanese company will partner with US innovation firm Anellotech to produce 100% bio-based PET bottles using key component bio-paraxylene. Suntory already makes 30% bio-based bottles for its mineral water brands in Japan but hopes to commercialise the more advanced packaging with the new testing site.

The company said the plant, in Texas's Hardin County, is scheduled for completion this year but did not disclose financial details.

Suntory stared working with Anellotech in 2012 to produce bio-aromatics including bio-paraxylene. The companies aim to use wood chip to make the PET bottles, they said.

Yesterday, Suntory's international spirits arm, Beam Suntory, announced it had created the role of chief strategy officer as its chief supply chain officer stepped down.
