The entire Sunny delight Beverages Co portfolio will benefit from the calorie display

Sunny Delight Beverages Co is set to display calorie numbers on the front of packs for all of its drinks brands.

The company, which is majority-owned by private equity firm JW Childs Associates, said yesterday (8 February) that it will be “one of the first” to comply with the American Beverage Association's voluntary 'Clear on Calories' programme, in support of First Lady Michelle Obama's anti-obesity campaign.

Specific details on a time scale for the move were not disclosed. The trade association began the 'Clear on Calories' programme last year and hopes that all beverage brands in the US will display front-of-packaging labels by 2012.

Sunny Delight also said yesterday that it has reduced the calorie count across its portfolio by 46% in the last four years. The cut represents a reduction of 131bn calories per year, the firm estimates, and will take 37m pounds of potential weight gain out of the American diet annually.

While Sunny D Tangy Original has dropped from 90 to 60 calories per serving, Sunny D Smooth's calorie content is also down from 90 to 60 calories.

All of Sunny Delight's reduced calorie beverages are on shelves in the US now.
