The Russian brewer, Sun Interbrew, has posted net profit for the second quarter of 2002 of €3.5m, 59% down from the figure of €8.6m in the second quarter of 2001. The brewer's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) were flat at €26.5m.

Sun Interbrew, part of the Interbrew beer group, said sales volumes, including beer and soft drinks, in the second quarter were on a par with the corresponding period last year. However, sales in value terms rose by 11% from €115.4m to €128.1m.

Klinskoye, its flagship brand in Russia, registered an 18% rise in sales, while its other brands, Sibirskaya Korona and Tolstyak saw increases of 13% and 14% respectively. Large sales rises were also seen by Sun Interbrew's Ukrainian brands, Chernigovskoye and Taller.

Analysts said an improvement in trading in Ukraine had had a positive impact on the second quarter results and offset a poorer performance in Russia.
