The UK-based brewer Scottish & Newcastle is to place health information on its beer brand Newcastle Brown Ale.

Though the company says the label does not amount to a health warning, it will read: ""Responsible drinkers don't exceed the three to four units a day for men, two or three for women."

The decision to add this information comes at a time when the alcohol industry is battling to persuade lobby groups and the government it is a responsible industry.

The labels will also tell people how many units the bottle or can contains.

S&N has plans to add the labels to its other beers but Newcastle Brown is set for a packaging change anyway so will be the first.

The new information would be printed on the back of the Newcastle Brown bottle from November.
