JAPAN: Sapporo makes shochu purchase - report

Sapporo Breweries has acquired a shochu manufacturer, according to local reports.

Japanese News Digest cites a source yesterday (15 June) saying that the brewer has bought Hayashida Shoten for an undisclosed sum. The acquired company will change its name to Tanoshimaru Shuzo, the source told the news agency.

Hayashida Shoten is based in Fukuoka in the south-west of the country, producing around 10,000 hectolitres of shochu per year.

Sapporo is hoping to up sales of its shochu segment to around JPY18bn (US$156.6m) in 2008 and to JPY30bn in 2016, Japanese News Digest noted.
