Nile Breweries, a Ugandan subsidiary of SABMiller, has laid off around 30 employees as part of an internal restructuring.

A spokesman for SABMiller in London said yesterday (4 May) that the posts lost were "mainly back office jobs" as part of a move to streamline the business.

SABMiller bought Nile Breweries, producer of sorghum beer Eagle Lager, in 1993. Nile Breweries has an annual capacity of around 750,000 hectolitres.

Eagle Lager holds around 60% of the Ugandan beer market, where beer drinkers consumer 4.5 litres of beer annually.
