SABMiller has refuted claims that it is supporting a political campaign in Zimbabwe.

Press reports this week have suggested that the brewer was among international corporations raising funds for Simba Makoni's presidential campaign for the 29 March election in the country.

The speculation prompted SABMiller to issue a statement yesterday (5 March) clarifying the situation.

"SABMiller would like to make it clear that it is not funding or supporting any political campaign in Zimbabwe and neither has this ever been under consideration," the statement said.

"SABMiller was invited to attend a fund raising lunch by Citigroup in London, an invitation that was declined. However, an SABMiller member of staff decided to attend in an entirely personal capacity."

Last month, the UK-based brewer closed its purchase of Grolsch, confirming that it now holds 99.46% of the shares in the Dutch brewer, following the closure of its offer on 12 February.
