US: SABMiller aims to boost conditions for Pilsner Urquell exports

SABMiller is to ship Pilsner Urquell to the US in fully enclosed temperature-controlled containers to stop it ageing in transit.
The process will ensure the Czech exported beer remains fresh and maintains quality, the company said yesterday (12 July). Distributors and on-trade venues in the US will also keep the beer refrigerated and away from light, it said.
“The primary enemies to beer are light, time and heat,” said Pilsner Urquell brewmaster Vaclav Berka.
“Due to these factors, the Pilsner Urquell that people have drunk in the US over the past years simply has not been the equivalent of the fresh Pilsner Urquell available in the Czech Republic. We are changing that.”
The beer will be sent for export within 30 days of bottling and sent express delivery. The system will cover 4-pack cans, 6-pack bottles and 12-pack bottles.
Plzenský Prazdroj, which brews Pilsner Urquell, saw its beer exports hit a new high in 2011, as domestic volumes held steady in the period.
