Remy Cointreau is to introduce an anti-counterfeiting bottle for its Remy Martin Cognac brand in nightclubs in China.

The 'connected bottle' is designed to prove authenticity as well as give consumers access to rewards and offers via a smartphone app. The bottle features a chip that detects when the bottle has been opened and if it has been resealed.

Remy Martin's executive director Augustin Depardon said: "Not only does the Remy Martin Club Connected bottle guarantee the authenticity of the product, but it also allows us to communicate directly with our consumers who enjoy our products which is a very exciting innovation. Rewards, events, special offers: our communication can now be completely aligned with our clients’ preferences for optimal relevancy."

The bottle will initially be available in nightclubs in China before rolling out in the country at a later date. A spokesperson told just-drinks that the price would remain the same, around CNY643 (US$104).

Counterfeiting has long been a concern for international spirits companies in markets such as China.

The Remy spokesperson added: "Rémy Martin, like all other major spirits producers, takes counterfeiting very seriously and is continuously looking for new ways to assure to consumers the authenticity of its products.

"For instance, in Greater China, we require that all empty bottles be returned to us by the on trade outlets (to make sure they are not refilled with another liquid)."
