The producers of Finlandia Vodka, Altia, reported profit before extraordinary items of €35m (US$30.62m) for 2001, some 70% down on the previous year.

However, the decline was attributed to the significant one-off gain Altia received in 2000 for the sale of a minority stake in its Finlandia Vodka Worldwide operation. Sales rose marginally in 2001 to €227.1m.

Earlier this month, the Finnish government shelved its plans to sell a minority stake in the government-owned concern following protests against potential foreign involvement in the company.
