The Lakes Distillery has launched the first product to be distilled at its northern England stills, a mid-priced gin that uses ingredients from the Cumbrian countryside.

The Lakes Gin is made with water from the River Derwent and contains 14 botanicals including bilberry, meadowsweet, hawthorn and heather. It follows the distillery's launch of The One whisky, a blend of liquid from other distilleries in the UK and Ireland.

Whisky from the Lakes Distillery will be used in the blend once stocks reach maturity.

The Lakes Distillery was opened last year and has so far seen a GBP5m (US$8) investment. At a launch event for The Lakes Gin yesterday, MD Paul Currie, who co-founded the Isle of Arran Distillery, told just-drinks his brands have a “huge potential” in the export market. The company plans to launch a vodka next month.
