Oregon craft distiller Big Bottom Distilling has added a Port cask finished expression to its namesake American whiskey range. The company, formed in 2010, said the launch of Big Bottom Barlow Trail, a blend of three whiskeys with Bourbon as its base, will be “our current staple whiskey offering as we phase out our Bourbons”.

Following the release in Big Bottom's home state, the iteration will be released “at a future date” in Illinois and Georgia.

Big Bottom Distilling is launching its newest finished product of its staple whiskey – Big Bottom Barlow Trail, Port Cask Finish – which is a continuation of the company’s practice of “finishing” its whiskey in port casks. The first of the Barlow Trail lineup was launched last fall retailing at $29.95 and Barlow Trail, Port Cask Finish will retail for $37.95.

Big Bottom’s Barlow Trail is a proprietary blend of three whiskeys with straight bourbon as its base. The blender finishes the blended whiskey in tawny port casks to give it a unique flavor profile. This whiskey offers a sweet berry and citrus nose. On the palate, it showcases a fresh, ripe berry followed by a hint of peppery spice that gives way to a smooth, rich and malty quality from the American Oak port casks.

“Our customers are big fans of our finished bourbon, so it was a natural decision to finish the blended whiskey in the port casks,” noted Ted Pappas, owner of Big Bottom Distilling. “After tasting this beautiful whiskey, I have no doubt our port finished bourbon lovers will embrace it.”

Barlow Trail, Port Cask Finish has already received a silver medal from the 2015 American Craft Spirits Association’s (ACSA) spirits competition held in Austin, Texas this past February. Big Bottom’s other cask finished whiskeys have earned industry praise with three Gold medals:

  • 2013 named Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Zinfandel Cash Finish “Best Bourbon.”
  • 2012 San Francisco World Spirits Competition honored the Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Port Cask Finish.
  • 2011 MicroLiquor Awards, “Taste Category,” selected the Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Port Cask Finish.
