The Portman Group has drawn up new guidelines for the labelling of alcohol units. The move is in response to the Government's Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy, issued earlier this year.

The industry-wide group has introduced the measure in a bid to iron out current inconsistencies in the labelling of units, while the Government has warned that the industry could face legislation if it fails to display unit information and advice about responsible drinking on packaging.

The group's guidelines suggest how products should be labelled according to alcoholic strength, with a bottle of wine, for example, showing the total number of units and the number of units per 175ml serving.
