JAPAN: Pernod Ricard breaks ties with Kirin
By just-drinks.com editorial team | 9 April 2009
Perond Ricard has said it will end its distribution deal with Kirin Holdings in Japan, following the announcement that Kirin is to form a joint venture with Pernod rival Diageo in the country.
Pernod Ricard said today (9 April) that Kirin will cease distributing its brands in Japan, including Chivas Regal Scotch whisky, from 30 September 2009.
Distribution of the brands will pass to Pernod Ricard Japan from 1 October, said the French wine and spirits giant.
The move follows an announcement earlier this week that Kirin and Pernod's arch-rival, Diageo, have agreed to form a joint venture company in Japan.
Diageo said on Monday (6 April) that the venture, to be called Diageo Kirin Company, is expected to begin operations by June this year. Diageo will take a 51% stake and gain access to Kirin's national distribution network. Financial details have not been disclosed.
Companies: Kirin, Pernod, Ricard, Diageo, Chivas Regal
