PepsiCo already makes kvass in Russia

PepsiCo may start making alcoholic drinks for the first time in its history, Russian newspapers have reported.

The soft drinks company has told the Russian patent office it will make cider, mead and sbiten, a traditional Russian alcoholic drink, under its Russky Dar trademark, Kommersant reported late last week. The move comes after registration of the trademark in the country's alcohol division was refused in June last year.

PepsiCo successfully registered Russky Dar on 17 May after it told the patent office it would manufacture the alcoholic drinks, said Kommersant, which said it has seen the registration papers.

The company produces kvass in Novgorod under the Russky Dar, or Russian Gift, brand name.

A co-owner of the kvass plant told Kommersant: "We have not received any signals from the company about their intentions to produce any products other than kvass at our factory."

PepsiCo has not commented on the reports.

In October, PepsiCo announced a two-year extension to its deal to produce kvass at the plant, which is owned by OAO Deka.
