Nestle has come under attack from trade unions at its French Perrier mineral water site, according to press reports. Le Figaro said yesterday that the CGT union has deemed as unacceptable Nestle's decision to set a 30 June deadline for unions to sign an agreement at the plant in Vergeze, southern France. The agreement concerns job cuts at the site.

The cuts, which affect 356 of the site's 1,620 jobs, are to be made by offering early retirement to the employees in question. According to the CGT, however, there have not been any discussions with Nestle Waters France management on the issue.

Nestle argues, however, that productivity at Perrier is three times lower than in its other mineral water divisions, while its salaries are 30% higher.
