Monster is facing two wrongful death lawsuits

Monster Beverage Corp has hired a former TV medical correspondent and reality show host as it defends itself against two wrongful death lawsuits.

Bob Arnot, who fronts the Discovery Channel's Dr Danger series, told CNBC he believes health claims against the energy drinks are “scientifically unfounded”. In one of the lawsuits, involving a 14-year-old girl, Arnot said the judge's conclusion she died of heart problems due to caffeine toxicity is “just plain wrong”.

Monster is also facing a lawsuit from the family of a 19-year-old man whom lawyers claim died after consuming at least two 16-ounce cans of Monster's energy drink the day before his death last July.

Arnot told CNBC that Monster is not paying him to be a spokesperson for the energy drinks maker. “They're not paying me to say anything, they're not telling me to say anything,” he said.

Arnot, who is a doctor, was previously medical and foreign correspondent for NBC Nightly News, Dateline NBC and The Today Show.

Monster is suing San Francisco's attorney general, Dennis Herrera, after he launched a probe into the company's alleged marketing to children.
