The brewer has said a strike is by no means a certainty

Molson Coors has said it is "disappointed" that workers at its Burton brewery have voted in favour of strike action over pay, but a walk-out could be avoided.

Trade union Unite said today (29 May) that 97% of its members voted in favour of industrial action over a shake-up at the group's Burton Brewery and Shobnall Maltings, following a ballot last month. The union claims that the 455-strong workforce faces being sacked and reinstated on inferior pay and conditions.

Within this, 184 brewery technicians and 41 operatives face having their pay cut by up to GBP9,000 (US$13,710) per year, Unite says.

On news of possible strike action, Coors said in a statement today: “Clearly we are disappointed by today’s announcement. However, this vote does not make strike action a certainty given that negotiations are ongoing."

Unite's regional officer Rick Coyle added: ”Until these talks have concluded – and depending on the outcome - the union won’t be announcing any strike dates.”

The North American brewer says the measures are "necessary" to "ensure a sustainable future for Molson Coors in Burton".
