UK pub chain Mitchells & Butlers plans consolidation after announcing that Mike Bramley, managing director for its Pubs and Bars division, is to retire.

Bramley will step down on 11 April and retire from the board at the end of that month, when he will be 58 years old, Mitchells and Butlers said today (21 January).

The pub group plans to use the move as an opportunity to consolidate its business model. Pubs and Bars will merge with the Restaurants division, under the leadership of Adam Fowle, currently MD of Restaurants but set to become chief operating officer of the new structure.

Pub companies are under severe pressure in the UK from a shrinking beer market and duty tax rises. Between five and six pubs are clsoing down every day, according to the British Beer and Pub Association.
