Consumption of mineral water in Italy is estimated to reach 10.5 billion litres in 2004.

The figure, supplied by the president of the Italian association of mineral water and soft drinks producers Mineracqua, Ettore Fortuna, would place Italy as Europe's largest consumer of mineral water.

Italy was followed by France with 10.2 billion litres and Germany with 9.67 billion litres, Fortuna said.

However, the average retail price of large packs of mineral water in Italy have decreased significantly between 2002 to 2004, Fortuna said.
