UK: Majestic Wine toasts Christmas sales
By just-drinks.com editorial team | 6 January 2010
Majestic Wine, the UK wine retailer, has reported a double digit rise in sales for the key Christmas trading period.
Like-for-like sales rose by around 12% for the nine weeks from 3 November to 4 January, Majestic said today (6 January).
The group, which operates warehouse outlets across the UK, benefited from reducing its minimum purchase from 12 bottles to six earlier in the year.
"Transaction volumes are up and we have seen a substantial increase in the number of customers trying Majestic for the first time," said CEO Steve Lewis.
In November, Majestic reported a 9% rise in half-year profits.
Its performance comes in marked contrast to that of First Quench Retailing, the collapsed owner of the Threshers off-licence chain.
