Japanese brewer Kirin has signalled its desire to broaden its drinks portfolio with the acquisition of RTD brand Two Dogs for an undisclosed sum.

Kirin said late last week that it had secured a deal with Pernod Ricard, owner of the Two Dogs brand.

The company, which had imported Two Dogs into Japan since 1998, said it was keen to boost its presence in the country's RTD category. Japanese brewers have suffered from declining beer sales in recent years as consumers switch to other categories.

"The acquisition of the Two Dogs brand reflects this strategy, and Kirin will be working to build further support for a brand that has proved popular with younger adult drinkers," the company said.

Kirin said it would relaunch Two Dogs on the Japanese market and would consider whether to launch new flavours to complement the brand's flagship lemon product.

Pernod Ricard officials in Australia could not be reached for comment as just-drinks went to press.
