US: Jim Beam Brands appoints US wine chief

Jim Beam Brands Worldwide (JBB) has appointed Bill Newlands as head of its new US wine business which will be created following the completion of the acquisition of Allied Domecq's US wine operations from Pernod Ricard by Fortune Brands.

Newlands is currently president and CEO of Allied Domecq USA Wines. With the acquisition of the Allied Domecq wine business, expected to close on 26 July, subject to regulatory and court approval, JBB's US wine division will quadruple in size. It will have sales of 3m cases and will be one of the five largest super-premium wine companies in the US.

"We are thrilled that Bill has chosen to join us and confident that he will be instrumental in building an exciting future for our wine business."

The acquisition of Allied's US wine business will give JBB a number of premium brands including Clos du Bois, Buena Vista, William Hill and Gary Farrell. The Pernod deal also involves the acquisition of a number of leading premium spirits brands that will make JBB the fourth largest spirits company in the world.

Stephen Brauer, who currently heads up JBB's wine operation, Peak Wines International, is expected to stay with the business following Newlands' arrival.
