ICAP's global conference, looking at industry's measures to kerb harmful drinking, opens today |
The International Center for Alcohol Policies (ICAP) has released its report into industry measures around the world to reduce the harmful consumption of alcohol.
In the region of 3,600 different initiatives have been undertaken by drinks producers around the world, the report says. The majority of these have targeted underage drinking, drink driving, establishing national standards for responsible alcohol advertising and addressing counterfeit alcohol production.
The trade body used the opening day of its two-day industry conference in the US to launch the report, which ICAP claims shows “how seriously alcohol producers take their role in working to reduce harmful drinking”. ICAP's 'Global Actions: Initiatives to Reduce Harmful Drinking' conference started in Washington DC today (8 October).
“In compiling this report, we were struck by not only the sheer volume of initiatives being implemented, but also the broad range of approaches and the high level of industry engagement with local stakeholders,” said ICAP president Marcus Grant. “The efforts we studied demonstrate how seriously alcohol producers take their role in working to reduce harmful drinking, and they show promise for future progress and evaluation of these efforts moving forward.”
More recently, the focus has moved more towards low- and middle-income countries, the report says, with the industry looking to “identify best practices developed in the US and Europe and adapt them in a culturally sensitive manner to countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America”.
just-drinks is teaming with ICAP for its next, free webinar that looks at industry actions to reduce harmful drinking, later this month. For full details, and to register, click here.

Here in the U.S. one of major causes for most of the college drinking problems lies in the fault of the Presidents of the large college not to inforce the "no drinking in Frat houses. I have written many of them to inforce the law. Although they admit that the average age of their students are under 21, they say that it " is a custom that has been going on for decades. and they don,t believe it is up to them to change the the rules now". They refute the charge that many of the deaths on their campuses are not related to the Frat drinking parties that are permitted .In addition, they feel that the local liquor stores are not taking names of those students buying kegs...(which is required by many states). When these Presidents take this stance, how are we ever going to get the drinking and deaths reduced?
